The Role of Spatial Information in Referential Communication: Speaker and Addressee Preferences for Disambiguating Objects
نویسنده
چکیده
This study evaluated the extent to which speakers and addressees utilize information about an object’s spatial location during referential communication. In Experiment 1 participants verbally requested target objects in an array. Results showed that speakers preferred to use color information to disambiguate the target object, and they described spatial location only when color could not serve to disambiguate. Experiment 2 tested the comprehension of requests like the ones generated in Experiment 1. For a simple triangular array, participants were faster at comprehending spatial requests than color requests. With a more complex array, the opposite pattern was found. Taken together, these results suggest that while there is some overlap between speaker and addressee preferences, what is easiest for the speaker is not necessarily what is easiest for the addressee.

Disambiguating Between Generic and Referential "You" in Dialog
We describe an algorithm for a novel task: disambiguating the pronoun you in conversation. You can be generic or referential; finding referential you is important for tasks such as addressee identification or extracting ‘owners’ of action items. Our classifier achieves 84% accuracy in two-person conversations; an initial study shows promising performance even on more complex multi-party meetings.

We conducted four experiments to examine developmental differences in preferences for using color, size, and location information to disambiguate hiding places. Threeand 4-year-olds and adults described how to find a miniature mouse that was hidden in one of two highly similar small objects in a dollhouse. In Experiment 1, the hiding places could be disambiguated by either color or location. Th...
متن کاملThe effects of common ground and perspective on domains of referential interpretation
Addressees eye movements were tracked as they followed instructions given by a confederate speaker hidden from view. Experiment 1 used objects in common ground (known to both participants) or privileged ground (known to the addressee). Although privileged objects interfered with reference to an identical object in common ground, addressees were always more likely to look at an object in common ...
متن کاملThe role of prior knowledge and expertise on choice of referring expression
Referential success depends on choice of referring expression. The choice of referring expression will depend on contextual factors as well as factors related to speaker and addressee knowledge. A shared-learning paradigm was used in which partners learned names of objects together and separately before a referential task. Items differed on commonality, with some independently rated as more com...

The importance of small urban parks (SUP) in mega cities has been accepted as an essential component of urban lung and restorative settings. As urban population in the world increases and the cost of maintaining large parks escalates, urban authorities are shifting their attention to creating and maintaining smaller urban parks. However, SUP may present a different ambience due to their locatio...
